VEHICLE SAFETY VERDICTS

Your car should be armed with not only a sturdy structure, but also an array of technologies that'll keep you in the know about possible collisions. There are two major organizations analyzing the safety of various vehicles on the road to let consumers know how likely a vehicle is to keep you protected.

Each one of these organizations uses a different scale when it comes to generating their safety ratings, but the 2021 Nissan Rogue has scored top marks from both of them. Let’s take a look.

NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION

In the 60s, highway travel and vehicle ownership was becoming more common and frequent. With greater freedom to roam far and wide—unfortunately—came more auto accidents. Due to this, the government needed to create an administration to help combat that.

The result was the formation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 1970, along with the Highway Safety Act. For over half a century, this organization has been bringing the public the top picks for ultra-safe rides, so drivers can buy a vehicle with extra confidence.

The NHTSA grades vehicles using a 5-star rating system, with five stars being the highest a car can earn. Luckily, the 2021 Rogue has achieved five stars in the following crash tests:

  • Front Passenger Side Frontal Crash
  • Combined Side Barrier and Pole for Front and Rear Seat
  • Side Barrier for Driver and Rear Passenger

The result is this SUV has also earned a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY

Established in 1959, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a nonprofit organization founded by various automotive insurance companies. Their mission is to reduce the number of vehicle collisions and injuries occurring from these collisions.

They conduct research through crash and road tests and grade vehicles from on a scale from “Poor” to “Good” in various areas. For the 2021 model year, the IIHS awarded the Rogue with a top score of "Good" across most crashworthiness tests, such as the following:

  • Small overlap front: driver-side
  • Moderate overlap front
  • Side
  • Roof strength
  • Head restraints and seats

The LATCH system’s ease of use even earned a score of “Good+”, so you can feel confident your children will be fully protected. Additionally, the driver-assistance technologies for “front crash prevention: vehicle-to-vehicle” and “front crash prevention: vehicle to pedestrian” received a “Superior” rating from IIHS, meaning that the 2021 Rogue’s safety features are fully effective in detecting possible collisions.

All of these top marks have led this SUV to be named a 2021 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS.

PASSIVE SAFETY SYSTEMS

So, how exactly does the Rogue achieve such high safety ratings? One of the best ways is through its various passive systems that work to enhance your safety when the unimaginable happens.

Among this class of features are the following:

  • Nissan Advanced Air Bag System with dual-stage supplemental front air bags
  • Seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags for front and rear outboard seats
  • Driver seat-mounted front-center supplemental air bags
  • Driver and front-passenger supplemental knee air bags
  • Roof-mounted curtain supplemental air bags

Included with these airbags is also a rollover sensor to determine if your vehicle has flipped and extra protection is required.

As mentioned before, the 2021 Nissan Rogue also comes standard with a LATCH system. Standing for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, this feature is designed to keep your little ones firmly in place during jolts.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TIRES

One component you may overlook when it comes to vehicle safety is your tires. These are the only auto part that comes into direct contact with the road, so it’s crucial they have the proper tire pressure.

Under-inflated tires don’t receive the proper amount of road grip and can cause your car to skid across slick roads, putting your family in danger. Luckily, the Rogue comes standard with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

It keeps an eye on your tire pressure for each tire, which you can monitor from a display behind your steering wheel. If one tire’s pressure drops too low, you will be alerted through the same display, so you can reinflate it.

When reinflating, the Easy-Fill Tire Alert will sound the horn to let you know the proper pressure has been achieved, ensuring they aren’t overinflated either. With the TPMS, you can feel confident your wheels are in great condition throughout your ride.

ACTIVE SAFETY FOR YOUR FAMILY

While passive safety is important for when you’ve been in an accident, the main goal is to prevent a collision at all costs. As you're busy tackling the roads, you want to know your automobile is working hard to monitor your surroundings and keep your loved ones safe.

Thankfully, the 2021 Nissan Rogue features several standard and optional devices that warn you of potentially dangerous situations, such as the following:

  • Blind Spot Warning provides you with added security while on multi-lane roads by monitoring your sides for other vehicles. If another car is riding alongside you, a light will appear on your side mirror, warning you not to change lanes just yet.
  • Intelligent Forward Collision Warning measures the distance between your SUV and frontal obstacles to let you know when you’re too close and need to apply the brakes.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection brakes your vehicle automatically in the event that a collision seems likely. When your vehicle employs emergency-braking maneuvers, you can mitigate or avoid collisions altogether.
  • Lane Departure Warning detects and alerts you to unintentional lane drift. When sounded, you’ll know to re-center your vehicle in your lane to prevent striking another car.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert acts as an extra pair of eyes when in reverse to alert you to approaching cars. It warns you when a vehicle is detected to make backing out of a parking space a total breeze.

Thanks to these intelligent amenities, you'll be provided with visual or audible alerts when you're approaching another vehicle. That way, you can take the necessary actions to keep you and your family free from any collisions.

The Rogue doesn’t stop there, though. Instead, there are multiple available safety systems as well such as Intelligent Lane Intervention, Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention, and an Intelligent Around View® Monitor.

NISSAN PROPILOT ASSIST

It’s also important for us to be comfortable on our drives, so we can stay focused on the road ahead. To help with this, the Nissan Rogue is full of driver-assistance features that not only keep you safe, but also work to keep you relaxed.

At the heart of it all is the available Nissan ProPILOT Assist technology, which is standard with the SL trim. This advanced feature works in two parts, starting with the Intelligent Cruise Control feature. With this on, your car will be able to change speed based on the car ahead of you, so you can match the speed of traffic automatically without pressing the pedal.

Next, this system combines Intelligent Cruise Control with Intelligent Lane Intervention to make sure your car follows the lane markers. Your car is also able to provide steering guidance, so you don’t have to use as much direct control to move your vehicle.

Best of all, the Nissan ProPILOT Assist system is able to detect when you aren’t holding the steering wheel. In the event that you let go of your steering wheel, the Nissan Rogue will alert you to put your hands on the wheel. If you ignore the warning, your vehicle will stop automatically and enable your warning lights.

If you opt for the top-of-the-line Platinum trim, your ProPILOT Assist with be armed with Navi-link. This means, when you’re using navigation, your SUV will use the directions to sense when your vehicle should slow for a curve in the road or to ready for an exit ramp.
