Nissan Altima

To help you decide, our team at Andy Mohr Avon Nissan has created this 2021 Nissan Altima vs. Hyundai Sonata comparison. We’ll show you the differences in these models, allowing you to make an educated decision on which one is right for you.

If you have any questions along the way, just give us a call.

ALTIMA VS SONATA: OVERVIEW

  • A 14.8-gallon fuel tank comes standard in the Sonata, but the Altima has a 16.2-gallon tank.
  • Available all-wheel drive in the 2021 Nissan Altima, but only front-wheel drive in the Hyundai Sonata.
  • A Remote Engine Start System comes standard on the Altima, but not on the Sonata.
  • ProPILOT Assist is available in the Nissan Altima but not in the Hyundai Sonata.

NISSAN ALTIMA VS HYUNDAI SONATA: PERFORMANCE & EFFICIENCY

Nissan AltimaHaving a solid performance in a sedan is one thing, but when you add that to a great fuel economy, it means so much more.

The 2021 Altima is powered by a 4-cylinder engine. This 2.5-liter powertrain boasts 188 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque for optimal power behind the wheel. This sedan also comes with an Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission), helping it get an EPA-estimated 28 city/39 highway MPG for longer stretches on the open road.¹

The baseline powertrain in the 2021 Sonata is highly comparable with a standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine as well. This motor is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission to create a similar efficiency of an EPA-estimated 28 city/38 highway MPG.

BUILT TO TAKE YOU FURTHER

Despite similar fuel efficiencies, you may find one sedan that is ready to take you further. The Nissan Altima is armed with a 16.2-gallon fuel tank, allowing you to travel nearly 518 highway miles on a single tank of fuel alone.2

With a smaller standard 14.8-gallon tank, the Hyundai Sonata will have you running to the pump more often. While a 15.9-gallon fuel tank is available in this compact ride, it still falls short of the Altima, only taking you about 509 highway miles before needing to make a gas station stop.2

2021 ALTIMA VS 2021 SONATA: ALL-WHEEL DRIVE CAPABILITIES

When it comes to tackling terrain and not-so-ideal weather, one of these vehicles might leave you wanting a little more.

The Altima is the first-ever sedan in the Nissan lineup to feature available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD). This allows the Altima to have a similar capability to an SUV, as it automatically sends power to the wheels when it senses rain, snow, and other challenging road conditions. This improves traction, leaving you feeling more confident behind the wheel.

Unfortunately, the Hyundai Sonata doesn’t have any all-wheel drive capabilities available and can only be equipped with front-wheel drive. So, if you head out frequently during changing weather conditions, the 2021 Nissan Altima might be the way to go.

ALTIMA VS SONATA: INTERIOR FEATURES

Nissan Altima Interior

Standard inside the 2021 Nissan Altima, you’ll find an interior that’s fully equipped and comfortable, offering features that give you peace of mind. First, you’ll notice a 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and a handy Remote Engine Start System.

The cabin of the 2021 Hyundai Sonata, though packed with comfort and special features, is slightly lacking. While a 6-way manual driver’s seat also comes standard, a remote start system and is not available for the base trim. While you’re waiting to warm up in your Sonata on a chilly winter morning, the Altima also has you toasty and ready to go thanks to this feature.

STAY SAFE IN THE ALTIMA & SONATA

To help you stay protected on the unpredictable road ahead, the 2021 Nissan Altima and Hyundai Sonata come standard with Intelligent Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking. This feature monitors the distance between you and frontal objects, letting you know when you’re following, too closely. If needed, this feature can even bring you to a halt to help lessen the effects of impact or prevent a frontal collision entirely.

For even greater protection, the Altima can be equipped with ProPILOT Assist. This top-of-the-line safety system intelligently maintains a preset following speed and distance between you and the car ahead to seamlessly keep you up with the flow of traffic. This system also works to keep you centered in your lane for a simple and enjoyable morning commute.

You may not enjoy your drive through rush-hour traffic as much behind the wheel of the Sonata, though, since ProPILOT Assist is a Nissan-exclusive feature.
