Tire Repair vs Replacement: What’s the Difference?

tire rotation

Whether you need a tire repair or replacement depends upon the type and extent of damage. The team at our state-of-the-art service center will be happy to help you determine the best course of action.

When to Repair: Generally, a small puncture, cut, or split in the tire tread that’s less than ¼ inch long can be repaired using patches or plugs. It’s important to check tread depth, first, however. If the tire’s tread depth is less than 1/16th of an inch (roughly half the diameter of a penny), then your tires should be replaced to ensure proper handling.

When to Replace: Often, if your tire has experienced any kind of damage, replacing it completely is the safest way to go.  For example, if your sidewall is cracked, your tires may have dry rot and will need to be replaced to prevent blowout. You should also replace your tires if they’re flat or deflated or if the tread isn’t deep enough.

Keep in mind that safety is always our first priority. If we feel it’s in your best interest to replace rather than repair, the professionals in our tire shop will help you pick out a new set in the right size and performance indicators for your car.

What If I Get a Nail in My Tire?

Tire eBook

Unfortunately, sometimes we run into debris on the roadway that can cause serious damage. If you notice something like a nail in your tire, the first step is to check your tire pressure. If the nail was too short to puncture the airtight lining, then you may be okay having a mechanic repair your tire with a patch or plug.

However, if your tire pressure is lower than the recommended PSI, you’re probably going to need to replace your tire. Be careful not to drive on a deflated tire. Either install a spare or contact your local Nissan dealership for a tow.

What If I Drive with a Damaged Tire?

It’s important not to drive with a damaged tire. Even if you have a small puncture, driving on it can cause the split to widen, which can make repairing it difficult or impossible.

Driving with a damaged or flat tire can also cause the sidewalls to crack and rupture. This is dangerous and can lead to blowout. Also remember that damaged tires are likely to lose tire pressure, causing your car to drive unevenly. This can damage other parts of your car, as well, like the rims or suspension.

To be safe, we recommend installing a spare or contacting your nearest service center for assistance.
