Family Cars eBook

Around the Avon, Plainfield, and Danville, IN, areas, you're bound to see a wide variety of midsize sedans on the road. Most come with flashy designs, high-tech gadgets, and finely tuned performances. Which one will best fit into your lifestyle, though?

In this comparison by the Andy Mohr Avon Nissan team, we'll look at two of the most popular sedans out there: the 2020 Nissan Altima and 2020 Ford Fusion. We’ll put these cars to a head-to-head test to help you determine which one may be better suited for you.

2020 ALTIMA VS 2020 FUSION: Quick Facts

  • The Altima offers an EPA-estimated 28 city/39 highway MPG, while the Fusion is less efficient with an EPA-estimated 23 city/34 highway MPG.*
  • There are four speakers standard in the Fusion and six speakers standard in the Altima.
  • ProPilot Assist is available in the Nissan Altima, but not in the Ford Fusion.

NISSAN ALTIMA VS FORD FUSION: PERFORMANCE SPECS

2020 NISSAN ALTIMA Engine SpecsOne thing that Nissan and Ford have in common is that they're both well-known for designing powerful engines. In each of these midsize sedans, you'll certainly have a bit of brawn.

Both come standardly equipped with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. In the 2020 Altima, this outfit produces up to 188 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The Fusion powertrain, on the other hand, yields just 175 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Therefore, you may notice a difference in the way these sedans perform.

In the efficiency department, these sedans begin to differentiate even more. The Fusion comes standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which allows it to maintain an EPA-estimated 34 MPG highway and 23 MPG city.

This is decent, but it doesn't come close to the Altima. As the Nissan has a standard Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission), it's able to maintain an EPA-estimated 39 MPG highway and 28 MPG city, so you can expect to make fewer gas station stops.*

To guarantee you have a comfortable and protected journey, Intelligent All-Wheel Drive is available in the Altima and the Fusion. This system applies power to all four wheels as needed to provide you with added grip and traction when tackling unfavorable road conditions, such as heavy rain and ice.

INTERIOR INFOTAINMENT and Technology

A solid infotainment system is important, no matter what vehicle you choose. Luckily, each model offers some pretty cool options to help keep you entertained throughout your commute.

The Ford Fusion, for example, comes standard with a SYNC® system. The purpose of SYNC® is to offer drivers voice commands, which are a great complement to standard Bluetooth® and a 4-speaker audio system. The baseline system inside the 2020 Nissan Altima offers similar capabilities, but it’s paired to a 6-speaker audio system for a richer listening experience.

2020 NISSAN ALTIMA Interior Technology

The Altima is also available with Nissan Door to Door Navigation with Premium Traffic. This feature seamlessly pairs your center display with your compatible smartphone, so you can send and receive destinations with ease, helping you be on your way quicker. This system can even send you a walking route if you had to park a couple blocks away from your intended destination.

Unfortunately, this technology is not available in the Fusion.

ALTIMA VS FUSION: SMART SAFETY FEATURES

2020 NISSAN ALTIMA DrivingIn both the Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion, drivers will have the benefit of some helpful safety technologies.

For example, vehicle stability and traction control systems come standard in each model. These are great for reducing wheelspin and sharpening your maneuverability on less than favorable road surfaces.

Both sedans also add in some smart safety features to their standard arrays, such as Intelligent Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking. This system measures the distance between you and the car ahead, alerting you when you’re following too closely. If needed, it can even apply the brakes to help lessen the effects of an impact or avoid a frontal collision altogether.

The Altima takes it up a notch with available ProPilot Assist. This system works to maintain a preset following speed and distance between you and the car ahead while also working to keep you centered in your lane—think of how easy your drives will be with this technology!

Meanwhile, this feature is exclusive to Nissan, so it’s not available in the Fusion.
